An original piece of music for ondes Martenot and piano, commissioned by The Atkinson in 2018.
In mid-2018, The Atkinson reached out to me to compose a piece of music for their ‘Art of Noise’ exhibition, pairing paintings with music. I was given a choice of a few paintings to work from, and chose Paul Nash’s ‘Vimy Ridge’, due mainly to its connection to the ondes Martenot; the First World War.
The piece I wrote made use of several key signatures, but only two chords. There are some unusual harmonies in this piece, which I feel reflect the quiet chaos of the war-torn scenery. The ondes part was ribbon-based, stretched over large intervals, and played as if weary. It was recorded in a local hall to capture a real reverb sound.
My piece was only available for listening in The Atkinson from September 2018 to March 2019, and will not be released or made available online to honour the transience of the exhibition.
